CD Projekt Red has revealed that it's actually remaking the first The Witcher game, and it'll be built "from the ground up" in Unreal Engine 5. This is the true identity of the company's previously announced 'Canis Majoris' project.
CDPR stresses that the suitably titled The Witcher Remake is still early in development, and the game's being spearheaded by fellow Polish studio Fool's Theory. It'll probably be a while until we see anything of it, then, but it's potentially exciting news for fans of the series.
Fool's Theory, by the way, specialises in RPGs — and some of its senior employees worked on The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3. As such, the project should be in good hands.
For context, The Witcher originally released in 2007, but it never made its way to PlayStation consoles. Right now, no platforms have been confirmed for the remake, but we imagine that it'll be targeting current-gen machines.
The Witcher's rough by today's standards, even though its character writing and branching quest design still stand strong. A remake has long been requested by fans, and now it's finally happening.

N.i.c.e. thats cool.they should remake part 2 also.but yeah thats good.i l💖ve remakes. I want a parasite eve remake.come on square enix.word up son
Will be interesting to find out if 2 is also getting remade. I only ever played through 2 on 360 back in the day and it was WILDLY different than 3 was (no pun intended). Never got around to 1.
Could be cool if they manage to make each game available on a single generation of hardware and allow all your choices to carry between them a la Mass Effect. That'd be a quick way tog et me to buy up the 2 older titles, for sure.
I'm hyped. I tried playing the original Witcher and it was rouuughhhh lmao.
If they remake this one then I think we can expect a remake of the second one
This is a remake I can get behind. The game was only ever available on PC for one and yeah the gameplay has certainly aged quite a bit.
I tried Witcher 2 on Xbox after loving 3 and thought that one had aged terribly as well unfortunately. Here's hoping this works out for them. I'm definitely interested.
@playstation1995 If this remake goes smoothly and ends up doing well, I think a remake of The Witcher 2 is all but guaranteed. Maybe not to the same extent as a total ground-up remake, but at least a much enhanced edition.
@playstation1995
the only remake i want done is SyphonFilter 1 and 2, c'mon Sony reward ur og fans
I'd rather have the PS5 Witcher 3 - they promised it ages ago, and seem to have gone suspiciously quiet on it recently.
I'm excited for this, hopefully it plays like wild hunt as the game on pc was awkward.
@Gamer_Guy its coming soon. I think they must have added some content or redone some tech or other parts because if it was just a case of porting some of the PC features over then it would have arrived already.
@pimpjuice. I agree with you that remake will be the best.syphon filter is my favorite ps1 games ever.come on sony.word up son
The story in the first game was fantastic. Feel like this remake it mostly to do justice to the combat cause my god, was it awful in a otherwise good game. And also, available for more platforms is a definitely good thing.
@Gamer_Guy someone on their twitter announcement for this remake asked about The Witcher 3 and they responded with "soon " so I suspect they are still on track for this year!
I would be so down for a remake of the first. By the time I got round to it it was super aged so I didn't go through with it. I love the world, lore and the attention to detail they put into the games.
@ShogunRok. I agree.i think its gonna happen.playstation never had the first witcher before.more remakes is always welcome.syphon filter.parasite eves.tenchu.onimusha.needs a remake.word up son
@Gamer_Guy Well they tweeted "soon", when someone asked about it under W1 remake tweet.
Well they better fix the crappy combat otherwise it'll kill the game
@Ward_ting @theMEGAniggle Good news! Played it to death years ago but would do it all again on a proper current gen version.
Yes! The first Witcher game is great but very dated. I remember when they announced the PS3 port; The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf - before it was cancelled. I wonder if they want to make it open-world for fans of the third game or keep the open maps like the original and 2. If this is a success, which it probably will be, I need a remake of 2. I love that game.
Ok, that's really cool. I hope the also release a remaster of TW2 for current plattform
Also how many TW games are currently planned? 6? The Trilogy, Sirius, Canis Majoris and TW1 remake? Wth
edit: Just saw that the TW1 remake is Project Canis Majoris
Finally I can rectify this being the only series where Ive only played one of the later games. Although 3 really does do a good job of easing new players into story. Unlike say, starting Yakuza with 5
This is good. Missed out on 1&2.
eugh. remake for you and you and you.
Great news. The first Witcher has a wonderful setting and story but the gameplay, especially the combat, has aged horrifically as have the visuals. As it was PC only many won't have played it.
Yes there are too many remakes, but I can get behind this one.
@stvevan I agree that there are a lot of remakes currently announced and many are unjustified but a remake of the first Witcher game makes a lot of sense. It is very dated and most people got into the series with the third game, so going back to the original as a new fan is a real pain, especially if you don't like playing on PC.
Very excited! Witcher 3 was my favorite game of the ps4 era and have been wanting to play 1 and 2.
@Dragonaged The Witcher 3 is for me too the hands downs better game of the PS4 generation. So, a chance to play TW1 (and 2 later) is very welcome.
This is a good idea. The first is incredibly rough but has solid foundations.
That's cool, I'd love a chance to play the first game. I remember watching videos of it, and boy did it look rough.
I imagine it'll be a couple years before it releases however...
@AinsleyE TW remake means TW2 remake. by that time cyberpunk will need one.
CDPR struggle to release one game right. let alone all they have announced.
every company is jumping on remakes. for easy $$
I own TW1, but it's... yeah. Super rough. Much eurojank. I'd be down for remakes of the first two games that bring them up to modern standards.
Finally a necessary remake.
Oh boy, can't wait for a mediocre at best game like Witcher 3 that everyone's gonna claim is the best game ever, like Witcher 3.
Ok, I'm pretty excited about that so long as it ends up on Playstation as well. The only game I've played in the series is the third because I never knew the series existed until the Witcher 3 was shown off at E3 and announced as being on PS4 as well.
@Milktastrophe Witcher 3 is filled with cut corners and lazy game design, but in 2015 it was also a breath of fresh air. I blame Ubisoft, Guerilla etc for picking the ball and.. not doing anything interesting with it.
@Ralizah the second one still looks gorgeous on a good pc I think, just needs a rerelease on consoles
Awesome, I wanted to play 1-3 but I just couldn't get into it being that it's quite dated.
I really liked the ps5 native version of cyberpunk but a game like the witcher in ue5..? I expect the buggiest game of all times in 20fps.
I mean even the matrix ue5 demo was all but smooth in terms of frames, when you hit another car for example. And there was literally nothing else to do and the ps5 struggled even with that
I got the game on PC and even with mods to make the gameplay smoother, it's still annoying for me to continue.
At this point, I would rather wait for the remake so good news!
Saw footage of it once. Looked like an N64 game, without the polish.
@Romulus HZD really doesn't sit well with me. I loved the story, the world, the whole lore really and some characters but to play it was kind of strange. Inconsistent maybe?
The first few hours were amazing, it played like it would be a world reactive RPG. Then it wasn't. It was heavy on the action and less heavy on the world and its systems. Then it kind of just flicked between being engaging and not then it dragged on and on until it finished.
I feel like during the development it went from an action game to an RPG one. Maybe that's why the RPG elements of the game kind of sucked or were non-existent. Most things just felt repetitive.
Also, in a game where you are constantly hunted and are constantly having to sneak, trap, explode or whatever your way out of mechanical jaws, mayyybe they should've been more generous with ammo. Yes there are so many things to collect but in many games where 90% of the map is filled with hostiles, you are blessed with ammo or your weapons don't require ammo.
Fantastic news! Hopefully the 2nd one will come not long afterwards.
Nice. Loved this game and was such an unknown gem when I played it So long ago
I am happy about this. The only story elements from the two games I know are from anything that's mentioned in 3. Obviously I'm familiar with the books, but 1 & 2 would be pretty much all new content for me 😁
What, I've just realised this moment, I actually want from CD Projekt in the future now though, is a game that tells the actual story from the novels better than certain a Netflix production. Something with Geralt, Ciri, Yen, Dandelion, Cahir, Milva, Regis, Angoulême, the rats, Zoltan, Field Marshall Windbag, etc, etc possibly with 4, 5 or 6 playable characters at different moments, in a vast, open feeling but mostly linear game, seperate from the original post-novel RPG game trilogy 😱😱😱
Well a remake nobodys moaning about for once..i have the witcher 1 and 2 on the pc and really enjoyed them although they required some beefy pc hardware to run properly..i never played the xbox version of the witcher 2 but i heard it was stripped back size wise..lets hope its not 10 years in the (re)making..
hell yeah about time. Witcher 1 has the best story I cant wait to see temeria in next gen...
@playstation1995 Parasite Eve remake?! respect. thank you. I played the PE2 many, many, many times.
I think Witcher 2 still looks good. doesn't need a full remake.
@theMEGAniggle HZD gives so much ammo and medical herbs.
@playstation1995 A remaster of part 2 would be fine, IMO.
@Fyz306903. True you are right .a remastered version of 2 is welcome.i never understand why the witcher 2 never made it on ps3 but its all good.word up son
@CthulhuFhtagn. If the remake parasite eve and make it like final fantasy remake the graphics and gameplay.and the story was cool and parasite eve takes place in my city.new york City.so its all good.word up son
Rogue galaxy remake would be amazing also😳😲.that art style still looks good and the gameplay also.one of the best jrpgs ever made.word up son
Yes! I can finally see Geralt fight that zeugl.
I liked it back then, i even hope it will stay with the original isometric top down style pov, not 3rd person, it be refreshing at this point, i liked it like that. And more than the 2nd game if i remember.
Any news on that? Probably be 3rd person..
A deserving game getting a remake. I've wanted this since i played witcher 1 a long time ago. Game has a really good story.
@stvevan what difficulty did you play on? I found that after a battle I'd be very depleted, then I'd have a mission straight away (because the battle happened on the way to a mission) and I'd either have to buy or grind for more ammo or resources to craft ammo.
Was I just bad? Honestly I feel like maybe I was just bad, but so many people share the same experience with me so I don't know.
Witcher Remake sounds incredible! I’m happy it’s getting passed to a different studio so CD Projeckt Red can work on Witcher 4 & Cyberpunk sequel. Hopefully this is a great sign that Witcher 2 will make it onto PS as a Remake too in the future.
sweet i play this with keyboard and mouse on steam or gog , a remake on latest consoles would be awesome id buy this on pc , xbox and playstation cracking game.
@ApostateMage did I ever tell you about the time I fought...
Oh, never mind 😬
The original was fantastic, quite a unique game that combined active combat with more traditional turn-based combat. The one major concern that really isn't going to translate well in the current climate are those cards. Expect a veritable storm if they reintroduce those.
@Romulus It's a crying shame that open world games have just been left to stagnate. I can't be the only one who's getting tired of the question mark plagued, side mission saturated open worlds of today. Only Elden Ring really managed to make the open world formula feel fresh again, and that was mostly because it wasn't choked by several hundred pointless symbols.
@rawzeku does the story of 1 and 2 impact your thinking when you played 3??
Just wondering on if they all interlink some how.
Great news. I've thought this should be remade for a long time. Hope they remaster 2 so the trilogy is on current gen.
@playstation1995 100
Best news today for me. The combat of this one is really clunky (and not fun) in the PC, I hope they follow a similar combat system as the one of Witcher 3.
I hope they keep 3D isomeric style and polish controlling. And I also hope they keep card collecting (wink*wink*you know what I mean) which I really miss in Witcher 3...
Fingers crossed this remake sell well enough for The Witcher 2 to also receive a major facelift.
I hate when developers make announcements so early. I mean, it's nice to know but I'm sure there will be delays and such. Seems to be the norm nowadays.
